بعد أعوام من نقل البشر جوا، تحال الطائرات على التقاعد وتخرج عن الخدمة لكن عملية التخلص منها أكثر تعقيدا من تلك المرتبطة ببقية المركبات.
تقول الهيئات المتخصصة في شؤون الطيران إن العمر الافتراضي للطائرات متباين، لكنها لا تزيد عن 25-30 عاما، إذ تصبح غير آمنة للركاب.
وتخضع الطائرات دوريا لأعمال الصيانة حتى تجعل الطائرة آمنة إن وصل عمرها إلى 20 عاما مثلا، وتتركز أعمال الصيانة على المحركات والأنظمة المشغلة للطائرات.
ويقول تقرير لصحيفة “تلغراف” البريطانية، الاثنين، إن أكبر مقبرة للطائرات توجد في منطقة “نونيارد” بولاة أريزونا، ومعظم الطائرات فيها عسكرية، وتبلغ مساحة المقبرة 2600 فدان، كما يضم مطار فيكتورفيل في كاليفورنيا مئات الطائرات القديمة.
